The site lies on the severely contaminated land of the disused Ravenscraig steel works. The client was keen to embrace the green process and deliver a sustainable urban drainage system on site. The levels of pollution meant that sensitive cut and fill operations and toxic resistant planting were needed. The budget for the landscape treatments was restricted.
Working with a junior landscape architect at HOK, Anna Tennent acted as project manager for the delivery of landscape plans and statements for planning and the delivery of the associated specification for the integration into the final contract. The proposals for the landscape focused on integrating the dynamic building designed by Populous into the wider landscape by providing a framed vista to the adjacent parkland and higher ground. The car park and external circulation were designed with sustainable urban drainage systems.
The sports centre opened in 2010
