The Togo flag is the national flag that most closely approximates a golden rectangle.
It was designed by renowned African artist Paul Ahyi, who died last year at the grand old age of 80. Ahyi was born in Togo in 1930 later studying at the Fine Art School in Lyon and then the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, graduating in 1959 after which he returned to Togo. He was internationally recognised as one of the foremost African contemporary artists. The Togolese national flag was adopted on April 27, 1960
