Camden is a popular tourist destination in London with a vibrant evening economy, which along with a vibrant market and London Zoo attracts a large number of visitors. The aspiration was to build on the transport links created at the improved St Pancras and Kings Cross stations and EuroStar as access to the area was being limited by poor perception of the Overground network with the busy Underground and Bus routes taking the bulk of the traffic. The intention was to improve access to Camden from the London Overground, a rail network serving large parts of London and neighbouring districts. The Camden Road Overground station though well located looked run down and there was no apparent connection to the overhead railways and public opinion was that it was an unsafe place to go.
The distinctive solution was to use the limited budget to connect the station and the associated rail bridge, a well know local landmark attractive and to make the entrance area of the building user friendly.
Anna worked with the local community, the local planning authority, Transport for London and the rail networks as well as Groundwork regeneration officers to design a scheme that connected the railway with the street by lighting up the bridge as trains rolled overhead and providing new signage at street level to identify the station to pedestrians and road users.
Other improvements included removal of the clutter in front of the station; provided new lighting, clear signage and restored the sandstone pavements and levelled the entranceway into the station.
The anecdotal evidence is that the perception of the station was much improved. The removal of street clutter and the development of a more attractive approach from the bridge side increased feelings of safety. After gaining planning permission Anna left Groundwork and the local authority undertook the implementation of the scheme.
